Vin Verification
When applying for a Florida title for the first time on a used motor vehicle, Florida law requires the owner to sign a sworn statement that the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the odometer reading on the vehicle are correct.
You have 30 days to register and title your vehicle with your local DHSMV once you:
- Begin working in the state
- Register your children for a Florida school
- Establish FL residency through rental, lease, or purchase of an apartment or house
You will be required to title your car or truck in the state of Florida at the same time as you register it. You can title the vehicle without registering it, but it will be illegal to drive the vehicle if it is not registered.

Used vehicles with out-of-state titles must have a VIN number inspection in Florida whenever the owner needs to title or register them in the state. Note: I’ve heard people refer to it as a Florida VIN Check; it’s the same thing. Along with the VIN inspection, owners must complete an application for Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification.

Driving School Attendance Affidavit
